With Spring almost in the air, it’s time to start thinking about outdoor living! And today I’m offering a few tips to create your own outdoor oasis affordably and stylishly. Let’s get right into it!.
Tip #1: Choose a Theme
The first thing I always suggest when redesigning or refreshing a space is to decide on what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Think about how you use the space most often, or how you envision yourself using the space. Will it be a Party Palace where you hosts barbecues and game nights for the neighbors? An Extended Home that creates an extension of the inside of your home? Or maybe, a Den of Zen created for peace, tranquility and relaxation? Once you decide on a theme that matches your personal style and how you’ll use the area, it’s time to get it furnished.
When I think back to purchasing this home, the one of my favorite memories is that the view in our backyard made me fall in love at first site! It was the most peaceful and inviting space I’d seen in a very long time, especially considering that our previous backyard was located in a small alley with neighbors right behind us. We had absolutely no privacy or anything scenic to view.
Our backyard in this home sits on a nature preserve, and it has truly been a blessing for not only my mental health, but for creating beautiful memories with family and friends. We are able to enjoy the most beautiful wildlife that the state of Florida has to offer, including all types of birds like cranes, hawks, and my personal favorite, hummingbirds; bobcats, deer, turkey…and yes, even alligators and snakes. I never considered myself to be a “nature person” before we moved here. But the peace, tranquility and beauty that nature has to offer if you just sit still, watch and listen, is truly something to behold.
So while the natural backdrop of our yard is already its own oasis, I love to create leisure lounge areas for family and friends to gather and spend quality time with one another. One way I do this is with our Outdoor Movie Nights. If you’ve been following for a while, you’ve seen me share these evenings with you before. We can only have them a few months out of the year (thanks to seasonal pollen, Florida heat and mosquitos), but they are TONS of fun when we host them. Think of it as a “Drive-In Movie Theater” in our own back yard!
And that brings me to Tip #2!
Tip #2: Choose Seating To Compliment the Goal of the Space
My outdoor space begins as an extension of our family room. So the lanai is already fully furnished with decor that creates a seamless and cohesive look from inside the home. On our Outdoor Movie Nights, the adults usually prefer the seating on our covered lanai. But the kids (and young at heart) enjoy laying out under the stars. I also like a dedicated area for a fire pit because…well, you know…S’MORES! And there is nothing like a beautiful set of Adirondack chairs to easily make it happen! Tip #3: Versatile Seating Options
Another easy and affordable way to create the perfect backyard oasis is by incorporating versatile seating. This makes its easy to set up impromptu seating areas in the event of an unexpected gathering. Or, maybe you just want to freshen things up just a bit and move your reading spot to a different area? Once you’ve finished creating your outdoor oasis, get out there and enjoy it! Welcome your friends and family over for an outdoor game day, barbecue, cocktails at sunset…whatever makes you smile, and makes it feel like…home.
