During these times, I’ve found that it’s more important than ever before for me to find ways to create happy spaces in our home. Decluttering and organizing even the smallest spaces has definitely helped to add a sense of calm and happiness in our home. It’s actually been a little more difficult than usual to declutter, with everyone being at home together. So I’m taking the time to make sure the kids understand the importance of pitching in, not only in their own spaces, but in shared spaces around the house as well.
I’ve also found it helpful to double down on self care. Not only does that mean making sure I put on makeup and do my hair (at least a few times a week), but I have also put more time into making our personal spaces more warm and inviting. Specifically, our Master Bedroom and Master Bathroom. These two rooms are really the only rooms in the house that are off-limits to the kids. But both spaces had really been neglected by the two of us.
If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that I rarely show our Master Bedroom and Bathroom. For years, we just didn’t have a whole lot going on in there. And as a result, we spent as little time in our Master as possible. But over the past several weeks, we’ve been doing some MAJOR, and I mean MAJOR projects in the Master, to make our room feel like more of a retreat for just the two of us. I recently shared all of the DIY projects on my YouTube channel, so if you’ve missed them, you’ll have to check them out. I painted the bedroom, designed and installed a DIY Board & Batten Wall, we laid our own Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring, and now we are building a fireplace and built-ins! Our room is looking truly AMAZING, and I can’t WAIT to share the results with you.
Of course, the Master Bedroom Extreme Makeover has started a bit of a domino effect, and has caused me to take a closer look at our Master Bathroom as well. Our Master Bathroom has a galley layout, which makes it feel a bit tight when the two of us are in there together. We don’t have a budget for any major renovations right now, but I really wanted to spruce it up a bit with all the awesomeness going on in the Master Bedroom. So today I’m sharing a few tips on making a Big Impact in a Small Space, using my Galley Master Bathroom as an example.
One of my favorite lessons I learned in Staging School was on the art of creating illusions by playing with color. You can make a small room look larger…a cold and dark room feel warm and inviting…all by playing with color. Now, the most impactful way to play with color is by painting a room. But there is a LOT that goes into selecting the right paint color to achieve the results you’re looking for, so we’ll save that for another blog. In this instance, I wasn’t in the mood to paint. We’ve just finished paining our Master Bedroom, and I’m tired of painting, for now. I’ll get around to it, I promise. But in the meantime, I decided to get rid of all the dark rugs, and replace them with these light, plush and fluffy rugs by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart. And I ran them along the entire length of the tub. By doing this, I created a bit of an outline along the base of the tub, highlighting the tub’s length, and instantly making it look bigger. So the tip is to “go lighter, and longer.” I also had some mixed-matched rugs in here before. But by matching all of the rugs with the lighter ones, our eyes are pulled to each of those spots, and the room just looks…bigger.
Another quick and easy tip to update a small bathroom space is by simply updating the towels you’ve been using. You’ll just need to decide if you want to use bath towels, or bath sheets. And for me, there is a BIG difference. Of course, the biggest difference between bath towels and bath sheets is the size. Bath sheets are much larger, and with a husband like Benjamin Buttons towering upwards of 6’3”, the extra square footage you get with a bath sheet is an automatic win in our bathroom. I personally think they also add to a more luxurious and spa-like experience. But they aren’t for everyone. It really depends on how you use your towels. If you like to wrap your hair in a towel after your shower, a bath sheet will be too large. But there is no reason you couldn’t mix in both options in your linen closet. Wrap a towel around that hair, and go for the bath sheet for extra warmth and security after your shower or bath. Some people even use bath sheets for beach towels, because they are roughly the same size. And bath sheets tend to be more absorbent too.
And for my final tip to make big impact in a small bathroom, style your bathtub! A few candles, some bath salts and our favorite flowers and make a HUGE impact. Another trick for a tiny tub space is to use glass vessels for your flowers and candles. Because glass is translucent, it allows light to pass through, and if it’s a small space, you’ll want as much light to pass through as possible.
As you can see here, I used this gorgeous gold vase by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart to style my flowers. These apothecary jars are also perfect for storing your favorite bath salts. And for added functionality I used this Vanity Organizer to store my phone and favorite essential oils to add to my bath. This organizer is just small enough to fit, but offers big impact because of its storage capabilities.
So that’s it, friends. Just a few simple tips that the pros use when trying to make a big impact in a small bathroom space. Lighting things up with paint, and accessories like bath rugs. Update your towels, using all the same color…and consider bath sheets vs. bath towels. And style your tub! I’ll but you’ll find that you use it more often after you do.
